Catastrophe Bike Woman Blues: Wednesday, May 21st!

A man should never be ashamed to own he has been in the wrong, which is but saying, in other words, that he is wiser today than he was yesterday. -Alexander Pope, poet (1688-1744)

Cut these words and they would bleed; they are vascular and alive; they walk and run. -Ralph Waldo Emerson, writer and philosopher (1803-1882)

Lads, With regrets, I have to pass on a ride today. Regards to Ski. Enjoy, G

Hi Whirlissimo! Sorry you can't join the Travelling Ski's this morning.

On another matter, Chloë posted the following on FB. You might well be aware of this already but thought it might be of interest for any additions to place on Galiano. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Footprint Sustainable Housing Partnering with One SEED to Build First Passive House Prototype! www.oneseed.ca

P, thanks. Oneseed looks interesting. I could not get the first link (Facebook I think) to work. W

Hi Luddite Man! Just copy link into Goggle and Presto! Perhaps it is better you stay home and work on your computer skills instead of lollygagging with Ski! Cheers, Il Conduttore!

P, do we want to try and play some cards on Sunday afternoon? Kurt arrives midday. W

Hi Four-No-Trump Man! I'm keen to play but will need to find out what Elly and Tony want to do that day. They return from Alaska tomorrow and fly to Toronto on Monday morning. Why not see if Admiral Barnacle wants to partner with Crusty Kurt, (two rough, exoskelatoneous creatures are the poifect team!), with Fast Eddy as a fourth. I'll join if possible or it might even turn out that we have table here and everyone can visit. Cheers, Lobster Man!

Thx for the update, Pat! Great pics. Moving is painful! Can't wait to have this behind me. Possession day is the 29th! We have too much stuff and I am at the Good Will almost daily. mc

Hi Sally Ann Woman! Know exactly what you mean about "stuff"! And we moved into our current, two bedroom place 16 years ago from a four bedroom house, garage and a huge amount of storage space, so we had had to pare radically! Nevertheless, as of this writing, we are still battling with trying to simplify. We often host two tables of bridge with friends and I've taken to handing out silly prizes, for everyone, as one way to rid ourselves of everything from kitchen utensils to pristine T-shirts, (from 20 years of squash tournaments), from books to CD's, (now on iPods), to unused, souvenir tea towels! One small step towards de-cluttering! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hello Islay Glad to hear you are enjoying life and friends to the fullest as usual. Wondered if we would hear from you this weekend.

The new grandchild is sure changing things up . Even Picasso is getting into the baby thing here. We bought Dana a travel system(stroller/bassinet/ infant car seat ) and Picasso asked, "Can you push the babies?" He also said that he likes babies but I don't think he will be too impressed when he finds out what they are.

We know a Don Currie who was principal of Barriere Secondary. He lived in China for a bit after retiring I believe. I think his son was a Donnie too. Donnie was really into sports. Wonder?

Just watched the recorded season finales of Bletchley and Call the Midwife . I think Call the Midwife has come to an end but Game of Thrones hasn't caught up to the books quite yet. I hope George Martin is getting busy writing the last book. He sure is slow about it. I don't think he has figured it all out yet.

Trying to sell our travel trailer. Online sites are mostly free but I did put in a paid ad in our local rag for those who are still without computers. Spring cleaning was thorough as we have a community yard sale coming up and our table will be full! Then it is off to Ottawa! My sister bought a little convertible Fiat in black and white with red leather seats so I have to pack light!cheers to all Brenda

Hi again, Brenda Louise!

I'm a tad confused. Has Dana already given birth? If so, didn't realize that this was the case. If so, Congratulations!!!

I will ask Jo-Anne if Don taught in Barriere. I don't know much about him other than his considerable involvement with coaching baseball and hockey.

I was wonderfing, myself, what was going to happen with Call the Midwife after Jenny left midwifery to pursue hospice care. According to Wikipedia, "although Jessica Raine will not return as Jenny Lee, Vanessa Redgrave will continue to provide voiceovers as "mature" Jenny. Redgrave will also appear on-screen for the first time in the Christmas special.

Series 4 (2015)
On 28 February 2014, BBC confirmed that Call the Midwife had been commissioned for a fourth series, set to air in early 2015. The series will consist of eight episodes, and will include new cast members Linda Bassett and Charlotte Ritchie as Nurse Phyllis Crane and Nurse Barbara Gilbert respectivelyHaven't read Game of Thrones books so no idea what is next!

Good luck with selling your trailer. Flamin' has a red Fiat although not a convertible. When are you off to Ottawa?

I talked to Ski last night and she said she would drive in from White Rock this morning as she wanted to go for a ride. She arrived at The Heartbreak Terrace just after 10:00 am and I arranged to meet Robo Man, (Giggster was otherwise engaged), at 10:30 am on the corner of King Ed/Maple. From there we followed Cypress to Marine and then over Arthur Laing. I wanted to show her the Iona route as she had never ridden there before.

Day couldn't have been better and the three of us enjoyed a leisurely pace and chatted all the while. Had to wait for about five minutes, just past the Sewage Treatment Plant, as there was film shoot in progress. Told the two people who were working the road closure that we expected to stop on way back and have lunch, at the food tent, on them for our considerable inconvenience!

Back past River Rock Casino and then over Cambie SkyTrain Bidge, up Heather to 37th and then west, more or less, to Arbutus and then to Raymondo's place on 23rd and Vine. Stopped for a few miutes to let Ski see his vegetable garden and front, newly landscaped yard. Waved goodbye and then I took her past Dino's place on 21st, lierally only two blocks away, and then past our former house on 12th and MacKenzie. From there we wended our way down MacDonald to new bike lane on Point Grey and we were soon back at The Heartbreak Terrace. Stats for today's ride:

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/504362807#.U30knLtonJU.email

Ski's stats for same ride: 47.19 km over 2:57'03 for an AVG 15.9 km/hr. I have about 5 additional km's on my odometre as I did a fair bit of "dipsy-doodling" waiting for her to stop and take pictures, unjam her chain and just generally meander!

Ski wanted to hit the road back to White Rock before heavy commuter traffic started to build up so after a quick java and some pita bread smothered in spinach dip, slices of tomatoe and salami she said goodbye. Great visit, over the course of her stay, so really pleased we had the opportunity to have so many rides and social visits. She flies back home tomorow morning. Will stay with her brother, Al, and sister-in-law, Aline tonight.

Cora Lee is at a Strata Council meeting as I scribe so I must away as I'm to make a salad as part of dinner. Plan to watch next episode of Breaking Bad. We viewed the pilot last night. Fascinating premise! Do you know it? Have been meaning to watch series ever since we heard about it but now that we are caught up on most of our other recorded shows we can explore! Unfortunately, so many wonderful things to watch and seemingly so little time! Fondestos to one and all. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Pic: Ski on our patio just before fond farewell!

Hi No, no baby until August! I bet if it is a Currie we know he would be a friend of the Woods in Barriere. The elder Currie would be in his 70's. Loved Breaking Bad. I especially enjoyed it because the series was preplanned with beginning, middle and an end that tied everything together! Enjoy!

Interesting about Call the Midwife. What changes ahead!
Off to Ottawa June 5.. Decided to try and sell the trail by consignment. Heartbreak Terrace? Sounds like a story.

As secretary of our Council, our attention always seems to be on People, Pets and Parking. What do your Bylaws say about renters? or running businesses from the unit? Two topics I want us to look into in September. B

Hi Patrice, Sorry for the tardy reply, but I have been a whirling dirvish for a couple days. Looks like you had a wonderful time and met some very interesting people last weekend. I felt bad for your friends who thought you were no shows but glad that things pertked up once you finally arrived!.

The knee is much better thanks, and I assure you it was not a ploy to get out of riding! although I can understand why you might suspect that. I have asked a friend from film if he would like to attend the tasting with me so I will give him til later tomorrow to get back to me and will let you know asap. Cheers, Al

Hi Whirling Dervish!

Pleased your False Knee/Phantom Limb Pain Syndrome has cleared up! No big deal about Dram but sooner I know the better. If you do decide to attend, please bring your wonderful trailer and we'll load all the leftover hootch into it for a wee bit of a party afterwards! Not to mention the drunks who might need conveying!!!

Hello Apologies - we sent our first email without prices! Please see below.

The access package on your FlexPass will be expiring on May 31st. We are pleased to be able to continue to offer complimentary parking to UBC emeriti and retired members of the 25 Year Club! However, there is an important change this year, so please read this notice carefully.

In order for the University to remain compliant with current Canadian tax law, we are obligated to report any product or service of value that is given to an employee or former employee that receives any compensation from the University. As a result, UBC will list the market value of any complimentary parking permit on T4s that are issued for the taxation year 2014.

What does this mean to you?

Your complimentary parking pass is a taxable benefit. This may impact your tax returns, and you may want to consult your tax adviser before you choose one of the following options to renew your parking.

(1) Choose one of the following parking options

Option A Annual parking permit with full 24/7 access to all parkades and surface Faculty/Staff lots, a taxable value of $1,200

Option B FlexSaver 20 permit package which allows you to visit the campus up to 23 times this year parking in parkades, a taxable value of $198

Option C  FlexSaver 10 permit package - allows you to visit the campus up to 11 times this year parking in parkades, a taxable value of $99

Option D Decline any parking permit and instead pay for parking while visiting campus, a taxable value of $0

(2) Reply to this email - no later than May 31, 2014 - indicating and confirming your choice

(3) If we do not get a response by midnight, May 31 2014, we will NOT allocate any permit and assume you have chosen option D   (4) Once we have your preference your current FlexPass will be updated.

You will not need to come in person to the office or bring in your FlexPass permit. The new parking permits work in exactly the same way as the current one you use and will be activated on your current FlexPass. If you have any questions please contact us and we'll be glad to help. Sincerely, UBC Parking & Access Control

Dear UBC Parking & Access Control: I would like to choose Option B, FlexSaver 20 permit package which allows holder to visit the campus up to 23 times this year parking in parkades, a taxable value of $198. Thanks very much. Cheers, Patrick Dunn!
