VWF Sneak Preview Blues: Thursday, June 12th!

I believe that in the course of the next century the notion that it's a woman's duty to have children will change and make way for the respect and admiration of all women, who bear their burdens without complaint or a lot of pompous words! -Anne Frank, diarist (1929-1945)

Hi Patrick, Wow, such excitement and intrigue. What a terrible thing to happen to your friend Paul. I can imagine the damage that two shots to the stomach would cause, plus potential spinal damage. There was a case some 20 years ago of a laid-off Kilborn Engineering employee who walked into the office and shot his ex-boss, so not without precedent that some people go off the rails over employment issues.

Last night I accompanied my cousin John Coates to a session at the annual, huge Western Canada bridge tournament (http://www.d19.org/penticton/penticton.htm) at the Penticton Convention Centre. Hundreds of folk playing simultaneously. It was a lot of fun. John and I were bidding a bit loosely, so had a lot of “down 1” hands and didn’t end up with a podium appearance. You might think of coming up for it some year. There is no need to be a member of any secret society, just show up with your partner, sign up and pay for a particular session, and play.

Tonight I’m off to my first appearance at a newly formed group, the Artisan Winemakers of Naramata. Should be interesting.

Don’t forget your body armour when you go cycling in the city. Shades of Homs or Kirkuk! Cheers, Peter

Hi Patrick! I hope all your plumbing problems have been fixed. What a strange thing for both yourselves and the the Sutherlands to have leaks at the same time. Obviously theirs was much more serious. Nothing worse than damage from water. When I put our bathroom in a few years ago one of the floor beams was completely rotten due to a slow leak from one of the pipes feeding the bath. Had to cut a large piece of the beam out and splice in a new section.

Enjoying our wine and sandwiches at Camel Valley Winery!
I have advised Krissy of our revised accommodation arrangements while in Vancouver. We have now been upgraded to 5 star! Very kind to offer to pick us up at the airport. It's possible that Krissy and Mark MAY be able to do this but somehow I doubt it since they pawned their car and I don't feel I want to be picked up in their Piggy van! Anyway, if you have other pressing engagements at the time we are quite happy to take a cab. I have given flight details at the end of the email. Splendid couple of days cycling. Yesterday Gayle and I decided to try the mountain bike trails at Lanhydrock.

At Padstow!
Gayle rented a mountain bike but I took up my Tri Cross since the tyres are pretty robust. In hindsight it probably would have been better for me to rent a proper mountain bike since I found it more difficult to steer and handle the bike with the drop handlebars! However, I managed to only fall once and that was from taking a awkward up hill curve. Fortunately I fell into a nice bed of dried pine needles so no damage done. We spent a good three hours on the trails and had a really fun time. We stayed off the most difficult trail since their was a sign at the beginning of the Saw Run, as it's called, stating that it was recommended for experienced mountain bikers which we are definitely not!!

Today we took our bikes up to the Camel Trail. We parked at Wadebridge with the intention of cycling to Padstow then back to Wadebridge and on to Bodmin and beyond to reach the end of the bike trail. As it happened we were about three miles from Bodmin when Gayle had a flat. I then discovered that my portable bike pump wasn't working! Decided that, since it was lunch time and we had packed egg sandwiches, we would walk back to the Camel Valley winery and have a glass of Bacchus with our lunch. Spend a relaxing time relaxing in the glorious sunshine with our wine and then Gayle had the bright idea that I could cycle back to Wadebridge to pick up the large tyre pump I had in the boot (trunk for those people that don't speak proper English).

I thought this was a good idea at the time so went at speed for 30 minutes, sweating buckets along the way! Put the pump on the back of the pump and cycled hard and fast back to the stricken damsel.  Pumped up the tyre and all seemed fine but within three minutes it was again flat as a pancake! We ended up walking our bikes back to Wadebridge! It was such a glorious day though that it gave us a chance to take in all the lovely wild flowers in the hedgerows along the trail.

Gayle has her regular luncheon date tomorrow with her old work buddies at St Clement so I will drop her off and then head out on my bike to Trelissick and environ while she drinks away the afternoon!

Here are our flight details: Virgin Atlantic VS095 arriving in Vancouver at 17.30, September 10th!

I'm off now to make a squash salad for dinner. Picked up a bottle of Bacchus from the winery so will wash it down with that. We still have your 2012 bottle in the fridge to bring over. Best wishes, Derek

Hi all There is a great article in the Vancouver Sun this morning about Colleen's new album. If you haven't heard it yet, you're in for a real treat. Colleen & Steve Dawson are performing at St. James Hall on July 31st and thought it would be fun to get a group together. Tickets are available on-line at:  www.rogue folk.bc.ca/

It is a lot cheaper if you are a member of Rogue Folk and are a senior! Hope you can all come. Elaine

Hi Elaine!

We missed you terribly, for bridge, but glad you seem to be on the mend, organizing events! Unfortunately, we'll be in Winnipeg, leaving July 22nd, for Clara's/Dusty's 69th wedding anniversary celebration/family reunion. Otherwise, we'd loved to have joined gang. Don't know Colleen's work but saw Steve with Jill Barber, (She was fabulous!),  about two years ago now and he was wonderful. Sure Colleen is as well.

Just to remind you, the bbq with Pat and David Coffaro is still on for Thursday, June 19th, anytime after 5:30 pm. Hope you and Ted can still come. Will be in touch about numbers in next day or so but appetizers, a green salad and desserts are up for auction, first bidder wins choice.

Thanks for including us in Rennison concert invitation. Too, too bad we can't attend as, sad to say, I've never been to a gig there. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Pat, I have some work in the morning but will be finished by 11. If that time suits you I could meet you at the top of Foreshore Park Hill about 11:05 as I am teaching in that area or we could meet somewhere else later. If you would rather go out earlier, don't let me hold you up. Ray

Hi Raymondo!

Meeting at 11:05 am +/- a minute or so, at the top of Foreshore Park Hill will be just fine. I suggest the plaza/roundabout with the large flag pole, across from Chan Centre/Rose Garden/Sage Bistro, (former Faculty Club, parking lot construction in front at moment, but shouldn't affect rendezvous), up slight hill once one crests FPH, across Chancellor/NW Marine, past Faculty of Law. Lots of space to circle! Give me a shout in the morning before you set off to make sure we understand where to meet.

Was by there quite a few times today as I managed to climb the hill six times, interspersing runs through campus after 4th and 6th ascents to give me distance I needed, by the time I was back on Spanish Banks, for a 100 km ride.

Stats for today's ride:

Had a great time this evening at VWF Sneak Preview at GI Hotel. List of authors who will be attending Festival in October is presented. Some really exciting people have been booked so you are welcome to list, if interested. Some good tips for placing on reserve! Talk tomorrow. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hi Pat and Corinne we will definitely be at Ann's memorial service, also the guest house is available for you to stay when you are travelling through as Cody is currently incarcerated and won't mind or even know who is sleeping in his bed. There is a bed at the farm as well if that arrangement doesn't work we moved here as much as three years ago but somehow you had forgotten that in the past, stay well will hear from you soon I am sure. Dallas and gang.                                    Hi Dallas et al!

Terrific that you will be able to make Mother's service. Was Cody charged with DUI? Have you moved to Rapid City or Boissevain? Either place suits us, just let us know who won't be home and which fridge has best left-overs!

Will be in touch as soon as we confirm some of the other details for memorial service and gathering afterwards. Fondestos from Cora Lee to one and all. Cheers, Daddy Bear Patrizzio!

Hi Dad, I would be happy to read something that we could choose together, if you like? Or Ayn, we could do something together? xx

Hi Goils! We'll probably have time, before Game of Thrones, season finale, tomorrow, to talk about readings, etc., but if you, Ayn, have any suggestions/thoughts, for you and/or The Lost Burritos, please send them along. Fondestos and Love. Cheers, Dad/Patrizzio!
